Countering Gender Violence: Initiatives Towards Collective Action in Rajasthan
Using rural Rajasthan as a case study, the author of this volume explores some crucial issues relating to the lives of the women in this region, and concludes that understanding violence and responses to violence are strongly influenced by cultural contexts and norms. The book: provides a theoretical framework by analyzing gender violence in the changing perspectives of development, health and human rights; examines the ways in which violence against women as been studied, and draws links between gender violence and power relations; analyzes the state's response to countering gender violence; discusses institutional measures and policy initiatives as mechanisms for redress and protection; provides case studies to illustrate these initiatives; and highlights the role of the three key Non-Government Oganizations (NGO's) in the state of Rajasthan, and their changing approaches over time to deal with the growing issues of gender violence.

Women's Health Initiative - The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) was initiated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1991. The objective of this women's health research initiative was to conduct medical research into some of the major health problems of older women.

India Health Initiative - The India Health Initiative (IHI) is a student-run initiative which aims to send health care professionals and students to various regions in rural India for developmental and educational volunteer work. The IHI is presently operating in several universities in Ontario, Canada.

Susan Starr Sered - Susan Starr Sered is the Senior Research Associate at Suffolk University's Center for Women's Health and Human Rights, having previously been the director of the "Religion, Health and Healing Initiative" at the Harvard University Center for the Study of World Religions, and a Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, and is the author of several books focusing on women's health and religious issues, including:
